Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty is also known as a "tummy tuck." It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening the abdominal wall. It does not involve shrinking the actual stomach (i.e. an abdominoplasty is not related to gastric bypass surgery.).

If you have a protruding stomach, and diet and exercise do not seem to help reduce it, a tummy tuck may be right for you. Often, after a woman has given birth, she will have a difficult time regaining her pre-pregnancy shape. In such a post-partum scenario, diet and exercise do not work because the abdominal muscles and skin have been stretched to the point where they cannot repair themselves naturally. There are different types of abdominoplasty depending on the extent of change needed.

A “Mini-Abdominoplasty” only addresses the tissue below the belly button. The lower abdomen can be tightened and a small amount of skin & fat are removed leaving a smaller scar.

A “Full-Abdominoplasty” tightens the entire abdominal wall. Excess skin and fat are removed. The shape and length of the incision will depend on the degree of correction necessary. Typically the scar will be along the panty line going from hip to hip. An incision around the belly button will also be needed.
