Tummy Tuck - FAQ
What is a "tummy tuck"?
A "tummy tuck" is a plastic surgery technique that repairs an overhanging stomach. The medical term for "tummy tuck" is abdominoplasty. The procedure involves the removal of excess fat and skin, while tightening the abdominal wall.
Will a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) help me lose weight?
Since a tummy tuck removes fat and skin from within the abdomen, you will lose some weight. A tummy tuck does not shrink your stomach, however, and it is not gastric bypass surgery. Although you will not lose very much weight, an abdominoplasty can help you keep weight off. Most patients find that a tummy tuck is the first step towards self-improvement - including regulating their diet, joining a gym, and quitting smoking.
Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck?
If you have a protruding stomach, which does not respond to diet or exercise, a tummy tuck may be for you. The most common candidates are women who have given birth and lost their body shape after pregnancy shape. Also, anyone who has lost a substantial amount of weight and currently has poor skin elasticity.
What is the procedure like?
There are three types of abdominoplasty - mini, standard, and extended. Each type concentrates on specific areas of the abdomen. In each procedure, an incision is made near the abdomen. Through that incision, excess fat and skin is removed until the entire area is tightened. Post-surgical recovery time takes about four to six weeks. The end result, however, is a flatter, tighter stomach.
