Eyelid Surgery - FAQ

What does eyelid surgery correct?

Eyelid surgery - also called blepharoplasty - is a cosmetic procedure that fixes sagging or drooping eyelids. It does not eliminate dark circles under the eyes, crow's feet, or other types of eye problems. If you have any of those conditions, please contact Melissa for more information regarding potential treatments.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Most candidates for blepharoplasty procedures are over the age of 35 and in generally good health. The most common cause of droopy, "sleepy-looking" eyelids is genetics. The second most common cause is age.

If you wear contact lenses, you are not necessarily eliminated from having eye surgery. However, there are special stipulations regarding blepharoplasty and contact-lens wearers - your doctor will discuss this with you prior to your procedure.

What is the blepharoplasty process like?

An incision is made along the natural shape of your eyelid. Then, fat and tissue are removed. It is this excess fat which causes eyelid puffiness. By removing the fat, the eyelid takes on a new, more aesthetically pleasing shape. Once the fat is removed, any loose eyelid skin is then tightened. Blepharoplasty results in a very natural appearance.

What is the recovery process like?

For the first few days your eyes may tear and appear red and puffy. Contacts can be worn after a couple weeks of recovery. Until then, special eyewash must be used to prevent infection. Your plastic surgeon will teach you the proper eye care techniques you'll need to follow during the healing process.

Because the incision used during the procedure is made into the natural curve of your eyelid, any scarring will be very difficult to detect once healing has completed.

The end result is wider, more "alert" eyes. Many people with droopy, sagging eyelids can be very unhappy with their appearance. Blepharoplasty is a very successful way to change that! It's a safe, simple cosmetic surgery procedure.
